Hosting
Thank you for your interest in hosting TG! People like you make the magic happen. Hosts are expected to procure the snacks before the event (we reimburse up to $175), be at Surfside from 4:30-9 pm for set-up and clean-up, monitor the door during the event, and pour drinks.

Please read the rules and guidelines below then sign up using the form at the bottom of this page. More detailed instructions will be emailed to you on Monday of the week you signed up for. If you have any questions please reach out to the TG committee at sio.tgif@gmail.com.
Sign up
After you read the rules, please sign up for an available date using the form at the bottom of this page.
It takes at least three people to host (but more people makes it more fun).
Email sio.tgif@gmail.com if you have questions or to reserve a date far in the future (more than 3 months away).
Emails and
messaging
All emails and messages about TG must be sent from our email (sio.tgif@gmail.com) but you can provide a blurb/flyer that we will send out the week you are hosting.
Keys
The main door of Surfside can be opened using a student ID card: insert your ID slowly in the black box — it’s a little finicky so try a couple of times. Bathroom keys are kept in the audio cabinet left of the fridge. PLEASE RETURN BATHROOM KEYS AFTER USING.
Snacks
All drinks will be provided, including non-alcoholic beverages, but you are responsible for purchasing the snacks before the event. We’ll reimburse up to $175 for snacks via a check during the event once you submit your receipts to a reimbursement form.
Be Responsible
You cannot host drunk. There will always be a TG committee member around if you have any questions or concerns.
Door Duties
Assign someone to stand at the door and check for (1) government IDs to ensure they are over 21 and (2) for SIO affiliation. If they have a TG Fish sticker, they have already been approved and you can stamp their hand and let them in. If they don’t have a fish sticker but are over 21 and are affiliated with SIO, encourage them to seek out a committee member who can give them a sticker. SIO-affiliated means: SIO student, staff, faculty, or guest of an SIO person (also NOAA fisheries, aquarium personnel, etc.). If they are a guest, they need to have their host with them at the door. If they don’t meet these requirements, please do not let them in.
Bartending
Hosts are able to serve beer and wine after completing the California Serve Safe certification process. The training is online, takes <2 hours, and the certification lasts 3 years. We ask that preferably two hosts each week get certified and we reimburse the cost of the training/exam ($15 per person). We will send detailed instructions in the Monday email, no need to stress about it before then. If hosts are not able to get certified before Friday, TG committee members will be able to pour for the night but bartending is fun and a great way to meet everyone at SIO! Committee members will be there all night to tap and swap out kegs, the only job of the bartender is to serve responsibly.
No Alcohol Outside
Alcoholic beverages may not be taken out of Surfside (even to go to the bathrooms). Make sure people leaving Surfside (even temporarily) leave their beer and wine inside.
Clean Up, Lock Up
Follow the cleanup checklist posted above the sink detailing the things that need to be done after TGs, including locking all doors (bathrooms and sliding glass doors too!), taking out trash, sweeping the floors, wiping down counters, etc. Clean up times vary but hosts can expect to leave by ~9pm.
Donations
Please encourage people to donate to the cause!
Note that no money can change hands at TG, including both TG donations and donations to charitable organizations. Please do not set up computers to collect credit card donations (although people can still donate using their phones).
Leave No Trace
Try to leave Surfside looking like it did when you arrived. You shouldn’t have to move furniture around, but if you do, please put it back where it was when you got there. Make sure everything that doesn’t belong in Surfside is removed (e.g. extra food, clothing; unclaimed items go in lost and found). If there are extra non-alcoholic drinks or wine, please leave them on the shelf in the kegerator, do not take these drinks home.
